God, Reason, and Evil (RS 3D03)
Fall 2005

TEXT PREPARATION 4.2 - Assignment due in class on November 28 from Group 2.

Please read:

Please answer both of the questions below with close attention to the texts you are discussing. You should devote roughly 1-1.5 pages to each question, and your assignment should not exceed 3 pages in total.

1. On Eichmann in Jerusalem: In the "Epilogue," what aspects of the Eichmann trial does Arendt highlight that have a bearing on the juridical aims of the trial?  What aspects are highlighted that point to the extra-juridical aims (or effects) of the trial?

2. On Susan Neiman, "Theodicy in Jerusalem": Neiman focuses special attention on what Arendt's Eichmann book has to say about the role of intention in the morality of an action.  Why, according to Neiman, is "intention" an important category for understanding what Arendt is doing?

NOTE: Neiman's essay is a study of works by Arendt; and Eichmann in Jerusalem also draws on various sources.  Make sure that in your answer you make clear whose views you are discussing at any given time.  Here it will help to review Gordon Harvey, Writing with Sources: Second Principle, p. 5, and bottom paragraph p. 7.  A source quoted in another source needs to be cited in full in a footnote; Hacker, p. 202, gives guidance on this.

Please type and double-space your answer, use 1-inch margins, and number and staple the pages you hand in.

Please keep a copy of your assignment to refer to in class and tutorial.
