| Hello!
Welcome to my website.
I am an assistant
professor of sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. I started here in 2004. Before that, I was an assistant professor at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. And before that, I was a graduate student at New York University.
I teach Introduction to Sociology, as well as
the sociology of sexualities, social inequality, and gender. Some other classes I have taught include research methods, the sociology of youth and youth cultures, and sociology of families.
I do research on sexualities and social movements.
My book, How the Religious Right Shaped Lesbian and Gay Activism, explores the history of contentious politics around lesbian and gay rights in the United States and examines the dynamics of opposing movements. In other work, co-authored with Robert Andersen, I examine the role of social forces in changing attitudes toward homosexuality. I have active research projects on Gay-Straight
Alliance student groups in high schools, and on same-sex marriage in Ontario, Canada, with Adam Green and Barry D. Adam. Check out
my curriculum vitae for more details.
Although it
may not seem like it at times, I also have non-academic interests.
I play women's
ice hockey in the winter and ultimate frisbee in the summer.I have a son who keeps me busy the rest of the time.
These days, it's important for everyone to be an activist, and I've
been working on that. Before the last US election, I published an op-ed in the Globe and Mail (a lot of good that did!). I am particularly interested in what
I call everyday activism. That is, the politics of challenging power
structures (e.g., gender norms, class hierarchies, systems of authority
in academics) through fashion, voice, small actions and other ways
of being. If the personal is political, each person is political,
right? You get the point.
Thanks
for visiting. If you're a kindred spirit, drop me a line and say
hello.
