The course will begin with a historical review of scholarly thinking about sex and gender. Then, we will explore how gender is built into the structures, institutions, and ideologies of social life. We will investigate the gendered underpinnings of four social realms: the personal realm of the body; the familial realm of marriage and the domestic division of labor; the economic realm of work within and outside the paid labor force; and the political realm of the state. Throughout the course, we will examine closely the experience of men and women, as well as those who do not fit well into these gender categories. We will examine the roles of race, class, age and region as important social factors that may alter people's experiences of gender.
